Is Zumba Just for Women?

August 1, 2012

I take Zumba classes at the Harlem YMCA. I was a bit skeptical at first because on the Zumba infomercials you see a bunch of women and hardly any men except for the instructor, and I don’t know any men who do Zumba. Clearly, women are the target demographic.

But I have fitness goals. I know that a variety of activities, not just weightlifting or running, will help keep me engaged. I also like to dance. Therefore Zumba seemed like it would be a good match. Plus, it’s included in my Y membership.

I had my first class last month, and I loved it. I am the only guy in the class, which I don’t mind. At first I was a bit wary because I believe in the value of safe spaces and I didn’t want any women to feel uncomfortable however the instructor seemed to encourage my participation (partially by making a few good-natured jokes at my expense).

At this point I’m starting to feel like a regular. I’m more comfortable with the routines, and it’s nice to see familiar faces when I go now. I love the class. The instructor is fun and engaging. I basically to dance my way into shape, and I always have fun when I go.

If you haven’t tried Zumba yet you should definitely consider it. It’s great for women – and men.
