There’s nothing like watching a young person nervously step up to a microphone, close their eyes, and blow the audience away. But that’s how it goes down at the I AM PEACE Cipher & Open Mic, part of the Occupy the Corners campaign.

India amazes the audience at the I AM PEACE Cipher & Open Mic
I’m very proud of Occupy the Corners, an anti-violence campaign. Street Corner Resources has been doing street outreach to eliminate gun and gang violence for years. Last summer, after the shooting death of Lloyd Morgan, Jr., Rev. Al Sharpton asked community-based organizations and activists to partner with the National Action Network (NAN) to do street outreach on the same nights at the same time in their respective areas across the city. This is what Occupy the Corners is about.
The point of the I AM PEACE Cipher & Open Mic is to allow young folk an opportunity to express themselves in a peaceful way. Street Corner Resources has always been about engaging youth, and connecting through music is a particular specialty.
